Sucks to get old but I have sadly come to the conclusion that, although I might have 5+ drinks a couple of days, I can’t do it every day anymore. Thankfully after this next cruise, we’ll be Diamond. I’m pretty comfortable with 4 comped drinks per day & paying OOP for the few extras.

It’s BRISK today! Driving up from the mid-Atlantic, we went from the upper 30s to the mid-50s at embarkation. We had a 10:30am check-in time, but didn’t arrive to the terminal until 10:50am. When you come off the NJ Turnpike in Bayonne and march towards the cruise terminal, you come down Chosen Few Way and have to make a left turn onto Goldsborough Dr (which turns into Port Terminal Blvd). Well, that left turn sucks. It’s a left turn against two-way traffic with no stop light. So you have hundreds of cars backed up trying to dodge traffic to make this left turn. There should truly be a stop light here, or find some other way to get onto Goldsborough. So we get to the Terminal at 10:50am, and wait in the baggage check line for about 10 minutes. We’re parked by 11:10am, and head into the Terminal. Security is a breeze, and we go to a check-in line, finish check-in, and right onto the ship by 11:30am. Once on-board, we went to Spotlight Karaoke for muster. We asked if they had wristbands for the kids, and they said they’d be in the stateroom (spoiler: they weren’t). After muster check-in, we made a bee-line for the Boardwalk and to Playmakers for lunch. The kiddos went straight for the carousel, and rode it a few times while food arrived. We got a bunch of nachos, fries, chicken tenders, and onion rings. Everything went over pretty well. I snuck over to Johnny Rockets and got an order of bacon cheese fries for our travel partners, and Johnny Rockets happily obliged and put it in a to-go box. While we ate, I tried to make dining reservations, but it wanted to charge us (we had UDP), I was getting boxed out of a lot of the reservation times I wanted, and it was slooooow. I gave up after 10 minutes and no reservations, determined to fix it at a host stand. Once we wrapped up at the Boardwalk, we headed to Central Park to make UDP reservations. I headed into 150 Central Park, and worked with the host to make the reservations. It took a while (20 minutes?) but I was able to lock in all of the restaurants we wanted, at the times we wanted, and kept our two parties together. Because the reservations were taking a while, I sent everyone else up to Adventure Ocean to register all the kiddos. I headed up there after everything was booked, and the other parents took care of registration and booking. The wife said the AO Babies staff said there were a “lot of babies” on this cruise, and limited us to 7 hours of time in the Nursery until Day 3, when they can shake out how heavily the Nursery is going to be used. We experienced something similar on Anthem last December, so we expected something similar. The older kids are first-come, first-serve, with no limits. Game-on. After Adventure Ocean, we headed down and found our staterooms were ready. We had interior rooms on Anthem, and walking into a Balcony room and being flooded with natural light will make you never want to to go back to an interior room again. My goodness! There’s definitely a spillover of sound from the pool deck, we heard the live music and sail-away party even through the closed door, but also understand it’s loud because it’s Day 1 and getting everybody wound up. It’s not so loud as to disturb a nap. Bags weren’t at our room yet, we took another walk around the ship to explore the pool deck. We went up to Deck 15 and walked past the Beach Pool. We saw people swimming, and I dipped my hand in the water and it was WARM! It felt really good! Unfortunately it was still mid-50s and WINDY on the pool deck, so we weren’t swimming just yet. We showed the kids around Splashaway Bay, and got our first soft-serve cone of the trip. We walked back to the Flowriders and Ultimate Abyss, then back down to the rooms where our bags started appearing. We did pass through the Windjammer, and it was swamped, as expected. I was also surprised to see half of it closed - what gives, on such a busy morning? We got unpacked, met our stateroom attendant, and gave all the praise to whoever invented magnet hooks. Really, guys, if you don’t have two dozen magnet hooks when you cruise, you’re doing it wrong We got everything unpacked, and started getting ready for dinner. I realized I hadn’t made entertainment reservations yet, and when I tried to do it in the app again, all the early show times were conflicting with our dining times. I called the Box Office, and tried to book Frozen in Time for 7pm on Day 2. Nope, fully booked. Ended up booking Day 6 at 8pm. Then I tried to book Aqua80 for 8:15pm on Day 3. Nope, fully booked. Actually, ALL of the 8:15pm shows were fully booked, which is really disappointing. Pro tip: Make your entertainment reservations BEFORE your dining reservations! We head down to Chops, and our party of five is seated at a 6-top, which a bench for 3 and 3 chairs. Our party of four is seated at a 4-top, but all the kids want to sit with each other . We end up squeezing all 9 of us into the 6-top, at the recommendation of the server. The 5 kids fit on the bench, and the 4 adults round the table with chairs. Service seems…slow. Coming off of MDR on Anthem in December, the MDR staff had timing nailed for our 5-top. Here at Chops, the pacing was drawn out much longer. Not sure if it’s Night 1 turbulence, or just how Chops runs, but from the time we sat down to the time we got apps was 45 minutes, soups/salads at 65, and mains at 80 minutes. We got the shrimp cocktail and tuna tartare for apps, wedge salad and mushroom soup for second course. All were really, really good. I got a bone-in ribeye for the entree. It was cooked perfectly, but was a little tough - could have used more marbling. The staff coursed the kids mains between apps and soup/salad, which was a blessing because they were about to eat the tablecloths . Unfortunately by the time we got our mains, the kids were fried. We ended up getting dessert to go, and took it back to the room. After we got the kids to bed, I did my mandatory wander-throughout-the-ship. Started on the Boardwalk to catch the Ravens game, then up to the pool deck to grab some night photos. I’m surprised how quiet the pool deck gets even at 8:30pm: everything closed, except a few hot tubs (but were empty). Same with the Solarium. I decided to go all the way down to the casino and test my luck, coming out a little on top to start off the cruise on the right foot. I wandered over to Jazz on 4 where I wrote the rest of this live blog listening to a great quartet. Initial observations: Oasis is a great ship - they really nailed the layout, distribution of activities, style, etc. I can’t speak for pre/post amplification, this being my first time here. Everything is immaculate, of course. I do feel more drawn to the elegant style of Anthem, but am excited to do more of the activities package on Oasis (water slides, dual flowriders, escape room, ultimate abyss, etc). I respect everyone's choices and wasn't looking for a debate or to be told I didn't have to wear one. I know people get upset when it's mentioned and I definitely have left the site when people could only talk about their views on covid. Just trying to be as respectful as I could while still mentioning a topic that can set discussion off.

I agree, the social aspect was nice, but most people (myself included) prefer the vouchers so you can order anything at any time at any venue. As a frugal cruiser who isn't a huge drinker, I enjoy being able to get free frozen drinks during the day rather than be limited to more standard cocktails from the old limited DL happy hour menu.

It's kind of humerous that we have to convince ourselves of the value of the Drink Package (which we purchase when cruising) based on a average per drink cost. We all go through the metrics of when we will drink, what pace we will consume, and come to the conclusion we will EASILY hit that 5 drink break even point. Then support it with. "I just want to relax and grab a drink when I want" , "throw it out when I want", "get another one when I want", etc. The irony of the matter is we all have to accept the absurdity of drinks being $14+ each, and then use it as an acceptable baseline to make us feel good about the purchase. lol Not too far off from celebrating $4.00 gallon gas dropping to $3.79..... Even though I plan to continue to purchase the drink package when cruising, the $100 per day mark is not far off. That carries some weight when you are looking at another $1,400 for the trip.

I am "that guy" as well, I always try and keep the access doors closed.

I am this neighbor but I have horrendously annoying family members that enjoy randomly showing up and knocking on our door at the worst times. It’s really nice to be able to control the situation on deck 17 and I apologize in advance to those whom I inconvenience.

Well as it turns out the Surf and Stream is not great on deck 12 forward which was where our cabin was located. I got way better service mid deck but after losing a post before uploading it I gave up on the Live portion of this blog, oops!! We are home now and had a great time! I will add some more recap photos in the following posts. On Friday after boarding/muster/excessive water sliding we had reservations at Izumi. I ordered two sushi rolls but actually received three since our waiter really wanted me to try the Tataki roll. It ended up being my favorite one! So happy he did that. The Izumi Ryu Futomaki roll was the most impressive visually but the least impressive flavor-wise. The mochi ice creams were so tasty too, especially the mango one. I will definitely be back at Izumi on future ships! How cute is this chopstick holder? I usually make one from the paper wrapper they come in. I love gadgets and things that serve only one purpose! After dinner we hit up Navigator Dunes for a round of mini golf. Always fun and a challenge when you refuse to put down your cocktail as you go along. My one-handed swings became pretty accurate by the last hole! We had planned to see the ice skating show but decided to call it a night early. Henry was there to see us off to bed! haha

If I had cruised any time between 21 and 35, I would have made out like a bandit with the deluxe drink package. Seven drinks a day are rookie numbers for a service member trying to reacclimatize. Thankfully those days have been behind me since I was 36, and I’m looking forward to using my upcoming Diamond vouchers for more mundane beverages such as bottled water.

perhaps, but its highly individual. I drink like a fish on cruises at baseline, but i also get specialty coffees and drink nothing other than pelegrino mineral water at all meals. So even without the booze lumped in there that adds up quickly. So for me, even with diamond vouchers, it makes sense to get a booze package as long as its not astronomically priced. I understand i am an outlier.

Last time we tried to do the 5+ on day 1 , we missed our Chops dinner reservation - pretty lame right?

Matt's article is great just a couple of notes/quick summary on using the App. (We have looked at the in room TV video but had already completed on the App so not sure of the exact flow there.) Viewing it on the App can be done before boarding and that seems to be the easiest since you can stop by your muster drill location to do the final part of the check off once on the ship. So, for example, on the morning of the cruise you can log in to the app and find the safety icon at the bottom of the screen. Click that and view the required information and videos, drill, horn and station. Once each step is "completed" it will be noted in the app. At that point all you need to do is drop by the station check in once on the ship. Everyone in the party should be done in one viewing but if there are multiple reservations each reservation will need to complete the sequence.

I got Soda and Internet for $17 last Black Friday. Booked it for all of my 2022 cruises.

On some ships the laundry crew transfer the contents of the bag you cram into a mesh bag that keeps your contents together. When you cram too much into the bag it all gets scrammed into the slightly larger mesh bag and then into the laundry. When too much is in the bag the clothes don't get properly washed. This has been discussed on behind the scenes tours with the laundry crew. You may not be outsmarting the system as much as you think you are.

People are so weird when it comes to mask, so I understand why @ellcee says it is a sensitive topic. Port of Los Angeles requires a mask while in the terminal. So many people wouldn't put theirs on and threw all the mask staff gave them all over the terminals and gangways. I am always respectful of policies, and I will wear one if I feel like I will be with people who don't respect boundaries.

Will also be on the TA. Really hope it will be open, now that they post it in the daily programs.

Not sure if people have seen this, but here is a helpful YT video on how to maximize use of space in the laundry bag. These folks fit a lot more than one might expect into that little bag by tightly rolling their shirts/pants. Phil

If going the magnet route get one that is personalized so that no one else would want it, otherwise it will be stolen by magnet grinches.

Watch a video, go to your muster station to get credit for watching the video. Then go enjoy your cruise.

My October 29th sailing will be my first one as a Diamond. I will be solo and plan on visiting the Lounge. Honestly, just because I am so excited to be Diamond! Maybe there will be some nice folks wanting to chat, too.

I go every morning for multiple cappuccinos (and occasionally grab some pastries) and stop by most evenings just to check out the appetizers. Nice place to relax on ships that still have it in the Viking Crown like Freedom class. Not so much when it's in "the basement" like on Oasis class.

I boarded Serenade this morning. The first crew member I met said this was their first sailing without masks. It's a very happy crew!

Boarding Navigator today! I am so excited to get to sail a Royal ship and not have to take a flight to do so. We are driving up from San Diego around 11am today after my husband gets off work. I have only seen 3 or so blogs from sailings on this coast so figured some additional pics/findings couldn’t hurt. Itinerary This mini 3-night sailing only stops in Ensenada, BC, Mexico. We had originally booked the following 4-night sailing to Catalina on the day bookings opened for these itineraries but after our 2+ week Greek honeymoon I had to switch us to the weekend to give our poor vacation days a chance to recover!! One and a half days off is way easier to swing than the 5 vacation days the original sailing would’ve required. Day 1 - Friday - Departs Los Angeles Day 2 - Saturday - Ensenada, BC, Mexico Day 3 - Sunday - Cruising Day 4 - Monday - Returns to Los Angeles Who’s Going - my husband (Adrian) and I (Daryl) Cabin Ocean View Balcony 1832. I am excited to be on deck 12 with easy Lime & Coconut access. I also put in a bid for a GS that was slightly above the “weak” segment so we’ll see! (This is lifted directly from my last blog as the details are exactly the same! ) Pre-Purchases We grabbed the DBP for a fairly high $75 pp/pd but I will be happy to not have to think about it. We are heavy water drinkers and the ability to grab bottles anywhere really helps when you’re also drinking enough to ensure maximum beverage package usage! We have two dinners reserved, night 1 at Izumi and night 3 at Jamie’s. I have been on ships with Izumi three times but this will be my first time there, I will definitely be trying the She’s a Geisha cocktail I’ve heard so much about! Excursion I booked a third party excursion through ATV Ensenada that departs from town and rides up into the mountains and back. Royal offered an ATV excursion but you had to take a bus out to the Guadalupe Valley to ride and I much prefer getting to ride right from the port area. As native San Diegans we’ve both been to Ensenada a bunch of times before but never up in the mountains for a sweeping ocean view! That should be enjoyable. We took a similar tour from Georgioupolis in Crete this summer and I loved it so much I knew I had to seek out ATVs while we were in Ensenada. Mostly I am excited to try the two Navigator-only water slides since we’ve been on the Perfect Storms on Oasis and Freedom. I love water slides! It’s cruise day!!

I think it will be a zero gravity experience.

There will be a card reader near the door, or on the door handle on some ships, just swipe your SeaPass card to open the door. As a solo I've found on some cruises there are folks open to sitting with strangers and on other cruises, especially after the shutdown, many folks don't want to sit with strangers. My DL usage is down since they went to the voucher system. I think that was the point - get people out of the crowded lounge. For me I've just as easily met folks at bars as in the DL. Some long term friends were first met on Empress that never had a DL.

I won't be on Wonder until January, but I decided to try to see if it's open now by checking out the current list of activities on the app. i went ahead and clicked on the calendar at the top. "Change ship dates", Switched my sailing to the current sailing, "activities", then "games and competitions", then clicked on "the Royal Society of Puzzle". It says it's running every day and the times are listed under "show more". It says, "This activity is held on the Escape Room on Deck 14 Forward next to Adventure Ocean". Says there is, "Capacity restriction minimum of 6 guests and maximum of 12 guests". Price available before finalizing. I would think this means it has to be open.

Like @Neesawe usually get our door magnets from various Etsy vendors. We have a few different ones at this point. We have both of the ones below (one is ready for our Holiday 2023 B2B already). These are photos of the shop’s samples as I didn’t have photos of ours. Be creative, have fun!

Depending on how much you drink $700 dollars per person (which includes gratuities and taxes) is still a great deal. If you take out the taxes and gratuities I think the price is around $539 dollars per person. And divide 539 by 7 nights that comes out to 77 dollars per day BEFORE taxes and gratuities are added in. Divide 77 by $14 dollars (per drink) and that comes out to around 5.5 drinks per day. I don't know about you, I can only speak for myself and I can assure you I drink MORE than 5.5 drinks a day when on a cruise as does my husband . When I break down the price like that it becomes a no brainer for me to buy the DBP for both my husband and I.

Our talented bartender at Sabor! With a strawberry daiquiri on his head talent The sweetest person on the ship… Ms Lusi at Ben and Jerry’s with her assistant this lady is so special and remembers everything you order and your name.

It is better for us since vouchers are available for D, D*, and Pins as it is not as crowded as it once was. For us it’s a quiet place to take a break, especially when it is close to venues like the casino, or a comfy place to grab a quick coffee/latte. Location does matter. It is also a great place to meet other cruise addicts!

Chef’s Table Allure has the best location for the venue. It has an awesome view. Our server was a magician and artist. We highly recommend Chefs table. On a scale of 1-10 I put it at a 15!

Has always been one of my favorite D perks. I usually bring a travel mug to fill (with the paper cups) and take with me.

Our last sea day was similar to the day before. Rain and high winds. We were able to enjoy the casita on and off. For anyone who's on the fence - you get to pick your spot. It comes with towels. Waters. Bar service with a call button that we never really used because they were attentive. Also an afternoon fruit plate. Depending on the cost it's worth it if you find a spot you like and just want to relax. I've heard midday gets too hot but we didn't encounter that issue. It also helped to have a roof so when it rained we were able to sit there for quite a while. Izumi Hibachi was the last dinner. It was fun. I may have not loved the cramp spaces making everything louder than a normal hibachi but my friend loved it. To me it was a little sensory overload. Food was great. My friend had a seafood allergy so they cooked hers in the back. She wasn't thrilled because she got her food last and when she normally goes to a hibachi place they cook her food on the grill first then the seafood. I figured they had a dedicated grill and didn't want to be responsible for cross contamination but she wasn't having it - until her food came out and then she was happy again. Spent last of OBC at casino and cashed out the rest. Had a few drinks and called it a night.

The only time I have not gotten a price drop is when there were no more cabins in my category.

Actually yes. Starlink is satellite constellation. Almost everytime there is a SpaceX launch (about 3 or 4 every month), they push out another 60 Starlink Satellites (2 trains - they travel in a group of 30 called a train). I think there are over 2,000 now in orbit and the goal is to get 12,000 in orbit.
