  1. Every other post is doom and gloom!!! Everyday is like groundhog day with the same virus talk being said over and over again. Im not wearing a mask onboard! Thats fine but you wont be sailing!! Its not a vacation! If thats how you feel stay at home!!! Cant make me do this or that! Well if you want to cruise they can!! Against my rights etc etc etc I can read and its on tv every hour i dont really want to log on here and its the same! Its boring to be honest! Way i see it we can all try and predict the future but no one really can, if we could would we really predict when cruising will restart or what that weekends lotto numbers will be? right now its all guess work and just waiting to see what happens. Personally i would rather read a made up blog about relocating to florida or whats the best beach or hotel in Bermuda than some of the depressing posts about Covid. Lets get back to the fun without all the covid, government and science posts, at the end of the day what will be will be and the only way we can change things is by following the rules and advice given

  2. Everyone should know how to contact their elected officials. Start with your local voter registration office or their website. I have already written to my governor and the representatives in Congress for my specific electoral district regarding the CDC and their cruise industry lockout. No elected officials is required to pay any attention to a citizen outside of their district. A senator in Texas couldn't give a hoot what I think because they don't represent me (and I can't vote for or against them). They are accountable to the citizens that reside in their district and those are the voices they will (or should) pay attention to. Start writing the elected officials that represent you. My representatives in Congress can't do anything alone but with support from other members of Congress they can explore options IF enough in Congress are willing to support them.

  3. I touched on this problem in my original post above. On Friday, the NYTs did a surprisingly apologetic piece on the damage being done by journalists (and scientists) contributing to the the nihilism you speak of. It carries over to anti-vaxer thought as well, that is to say, "if the vaccines have so many caveats about effectiveness, possible side effects, and worst of all the potential for re-infection by a variant even if you have been vaccinated, why bother." First none of this stuff - and it's coming out of the mouths of respected sources like Fauci, for example we're making great progress, the vaccines are working ..... but, but, but, are factually accurate. It's also misleading. These "experts" (and they are) send a message that we aren't sophisticated or knowledgeable enough to understand details. Here are the facts: the vaccines already in circulation to include Pfizer's, Moderna's, AZ's and as far as trials go, J&J, all have efficacy v. all three known and studied variants (there are actually over 200 of them but the variants being studied the most are ones that have mutations in the spike proteins and demonstrably increase rate of transmission or R0). I can't speak for the Chinese, Russian or Indian vaccines. Casual and cursory looks indicate these vaccines are working too. What large scale studies being conducted in Israel by apolitical, public health agencies have already demonstrated or early and small scale studies point to is that NO ONE is getting seriously ill or dying regardless of the genomic structure of SARS-2 that is the infecting agent. NO ONE! There are RARE occasions (although the press will make you think it's in the millions) of vaccinated people that get re-infected. Serology studies of these people indicate that SARS-2 viral loads are very low (reduces shedding) and that symptoms on re-infection are similar to the common cold - this is a coronavirus after all. You'll catch a cold by the same means that people were catching COVID a year ago. Vaccinated people just aren't getting sent to the ICU and dying anymore There is also considerable evidence that vaccinated people - even after the first shot - are protected, don't need to mask or distance in all circumstances and many of the state and local patch-work mitigation measures can be safely ignored. That doesn't mean its a free-for-all. All levels of Illness from seasonal Influenza have been significantly suppressed. That is because of human behaviors being followed for COVID by a lot of folks. It is one of the reasons, along with the normal trends of viruses and the introduction of vaccines that every COVID metric is on the decline and downward trending and not just by a little. Those kinds of sensible measures should continue to be followed - wash your hands, even wearing a mask in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces where people gather is a good idea that we should continue to practice as most Asians do.

    Rethinking my plans

We took each of our grand kids on a cruise when they turned 5. This was a rite of passage that they and their parents looked forward to as they approached that magic age. The reason for the single child at a time was so we could concentrate our attention on that particular one and not have to constantly move to track and entertain them all. Once we had taken all of them on their cruise we then took each of the families units separately on a cruise with us. Mom and Dad were responsible for the tracking of their kids and getting them in and out of Adventure Ocean but we did do total family events together such as the water features, shows, etc. We separated each family unit so there was not a conflict as to who got grand parents attention. Now each of our kids are planning their family vacations with cruises as well as trips to Disney, etc and each of the grand kids keep asking if we will be taking them one at a time again at an older age to repeat the great times they had when they were younger.

I love the idea of taking them 1 at a time...after all, that means more cruises for me ?

  7. They announced the cruises some time in October if I’m not wrong. I booked the sky loft for 4 on 21 Nov and paid SGD$3778 (~USD$2854). Got a reprice a few days later to $3578. Upgraded to the owner’s loft on 18 Jan with a new total of $5382. (~USD$4066) Not sure how that compares with other sailings as from what I see so far, other sailing seem way higher priced In the beginning, my sailing was one of the cheapest ones as it’s a few weeks before the school holidays here and had the a lot of vacancies. It’s slowly filling up but definitely no where near capacity, unlike the Dec cruises or the past Chinese New Year sailing.

    Deposit went up?

Deposit requirements vary based on length of cruise and number of guests per stateroom. Generally, deposit guidelines for double occupancy staterooms are $200 per stateroom for 1 to 5 night cruises, $500 per stateroom for 6 to 9 night cruises and $900 per stateroom for 10 night or longer cruises. Straight from the source-https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/deposit-requirements Notice it says per stateroom above but also double occupancy. A family of 4 pays a $1000 deposit on a 7 night cruise.

Regarding children under 16 , both Moderna and Pfizer started conducting some tests and will have results in few month. By the way , In Israel they already started to admit the vaccine to children with health risk factors (mainly issues with the immune system) , it is being done under emergency approval for the last two month and so far no issues.

  15. Welcome to the message boards! For ruins Costa Maya is your best bet. From Cozumel the ruins require a long ferry ride across a stretch of water that is known to be rough plus a bus ride. The best ruins are on the same side of the channel as Costa Maya so only a bus ride, no ferry. For beach I'd look for a private beach offering in Cozumel. There are a couple popular ones such as Nachi Cocom or Mr. Sanchos among others. Some are better for kids, some can get busy if a lot of ships are in port, some include drinks and food, etc. so do a little research to find one that meets your needs. In Belize i'd look at a shore excursion through the cruise line. Since this is a tender stop it's not the best destination to do your own thing or to simply get off the tender and wander around.

  16. I used to dive with inserts in my mask -- until -- I discovered contact lenses! If there's any way you can get them prescribed and wear them while snorkeling or scuba-ing, do try it! The salt water was much more comfortable if I got water in my mask, and I had no problem keeping them in my eyes (well, until I decided to dive in the water without my mask, and one washed out of my eye ? )

  17. You've thought about it, you've dreamt about it, you've researched it - Are you going to do something about it? Lets have a look and see what I did. Many Many Many years ago, my parents took the whole family on cruises around the south pacific. I still have a hand carved fisherman's sail boat model from Fiji with 1977 carved into the side. (Hmmm 43 years ago) Back then you could throw coins over the side of the ship when in port and the local would swim down and pick them up, how times have changed. We are addict's, all it took for me then was a taste 43 years ago and even to this day I love cruising !!!! I had wanted to cruise for a VERY long time and based on my professional responsibilities it just wasn't possible. My best friend and I had talked about taking a cruise for a very long time. And it took a long time for both of our schedules to be in line with each other so that we could take time off work to go on a cruise together. In August of 2019 on the celebrity reflection, my best friend and I (Including Families) took a 12 NIGHT SCANDINAVIA & RUSSIA CRUISE. Well like a junkie that has been clean for decades, my cruise addiction got what it needed and like a fresh blood transfusion "CRUISING" was back in my blood. Within a month of returning from Russia, I had booked a cruise for my family. The problem I had, was that it was going to be a surprise, a VERY BIG surprise and I could not tell them. Every chance I got, I was watching Royal Caribbean Blog, The Klaykowski's (AKA The ship show), Cruise tips TV, Tips for Travelers and on and on. "I LOVED IT". Some of it as silly as it sounds was over my head and not until now do I understand what and why they were saying things. If it was mentioned, I bought it. Magnetic Hooks, Highlighters, collapsible laundry hampers, first aid kits, dental kits, sunglasses, sunhats and the list goes on. If you recommended it I got it. My mother had died in January and I thought that it would be a great surprise for my father to go on a cruise with us. In short my father has become a home body and getting him to the cruise terminal in Sydney, let alone out of the house was a bigger task than I thought it was going to be. After three subtle attempts to see if I could get him to Sydney (Australia) to go to sea world, I accepted that he was simply content at home and that was OK. So how do you purchase all of these cruise must haves and not have anyone catch on to the fact that that's exactly what you are planning. EASY - You invent a cruise !!!! What I mean is, you let them know that you are planning a cruise sometime in the distant future but not when they expect it. At the time, we were in Hong Kong and I had told them that I have arranged a vacation at Sea World on the Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia). Everyone was happy we were going on a vacation. Problem was that the cruise I had planned was departing out of Sydney and Sea World is in another state, Queensland. Kind of like saying we were going to Orlando but needed to go via New York. When going to Australia we always flew into Sydney, so telling them that we would fly into Sydney spending a couple of days there and then flying to Brisbane did not draw any undue attention. The reason I used Sea World, was because they had already been there before and they knew what to expect. Because it is a resort it was easy to explain why they needed swimming paraphernalia, hats, sunglasses and so on. So how do you explain why they need cocktail dresses, evening wear, high heeled shoes and so on? I know - tell them that I have prepared a professional photo shoot. We need everyone looking their best so the family can have some lovely photo's to look back on. I had planned everything down to the most minuscule detail. I went to a photo store to laminate their boarding passes, I had their bag tags printed in color, I had personal lanyards made. I even bought them Samsung tablets (Not iPads) as a ruse to give them gifts that included their boarding passes in a bag. Being the genius that I am, I forgot where I hid the damn things before we left. Using some Sherlock Homes logic I worked out - now where would you hide those things if I were you. I FOUND THEM. Afterwards thinking what kind of an idiot would hide them there. Just think about planning a cruise months in advance and 1.) You cannot tell anyone and 2.) Getting them to pack for it. It's crazy !!! My wife though I was nut's, because I was watching her pack. I've never done this before, but she is a genius at packing. (Yes I got the CUBES) This was to ensure that she didn't forget anything (She did - no magnetic hooks or collapsible clothes hamper.) Who needs that stuff at sea world right. A small side note. We had a mini brake in Japan earlier in the year. We were staying at Universal Studios (Osaka) Japan and on one of our day trips went to Osaka Aquarium for the day. To get there you take a short ferry trip from universal to the aquarium. After the day at the aquarium, on the way back to our hotel. While we were on the return trip on the ferry, guess what ? We passed Spectrum of the Seas. I just wanted to explode, I just wanted to shout out and say "LOOK THATS WHAT YOU WILL BE ON AT XMAS" It took so much strength to keep my mouth shut, but I did and the surprise was still safe - so the story continues. We arrived in Sydney two days before the cruise, so we were in no rush. Qantas for the most part are very reliable, so I was not expecting any flight delays. I was able to upgrade of flight tickets so the surprise was just getting better and better. They didn't know about the business class seats either. When I mentioned that I had planned this down to the most minuscule detail I was not kidding. I had booked a hotel in Sydney that would require us to take a ferry into Circular Quay. Circular Quay is where the cruise ships dock in-between the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor bridge. This would have us pass the Ovation of the Seas before reaching the wharf. I had made sure that I had the current time table for the ferry, so that we would pass the ship just at the right time and subsequently we could board the ship at our predetermined boarding time. I don't know what time we went to bed the night before the BIG SURPRISE cruise, I was so paranoid about sleeping in and missing the ferry. Remember my wife and two daughters thought that we were going to Sydney airport from the hotel to fly to Brisbane. I'm so close at pulling this off. so so close. We had stayed at this hotel before and my wife new that we could get a reliable airport shuttle service. From the hotel to the wharf, where the ferry was to depart was about a 5 minute work downhill (A very steep downward hill) We had five large suitcases, backpacks, camera bags and nick knacks hanging off us. We looked like Sherpas taking guests belongings to the top of Everest. I'm so close, we were all struggling going down the hill with all of this luggage. My wife looks at me like you cheap bastard you could not even cough up enough money to get the airport shuttle. We are half an hour away from the greatest surprise ever and do I have to take this #$%@ from her. YES YOU DO! She doesn't know and I probably would have thought the same thing. We get to the wharf everything is on track, we are early for the ferry and we are almost there. One thing I have not mentioned is that this ferry is designed for commuters carrying either a hand bag or a brief case, not a family of four going away for two weeks on a cruise. In Australia everyone is quite nice and patient so like a worker bee I grab one bag put it on the ferry and run back and get another till we have everything onboard the ferry. Now I have to get the timing just right, as I had envisaged such a long time ago I was going to get this on film. How do I get them outside while I get their xmas gift bags ready? We will be passing the Sydney Opera house which is on the left hand side of the ferry and the Ovation of the Seas will be on the right hand side as we pull into the wharf. I ask my wife to take the girls out and get some shots with the Sydney opera house in the background, OK - no problem out they go. Every second counts now I have to get it just right. I get everything organized, all of the bags are in order and ready to be given out. I go out the back and ask them to stand on the opposite side of the ferry and this is what happened. When booking the cruise I figured this will be a one off and if I am going to do it I should go all out and give them a cruise that they will never forget. Hence the cost of the surprise, you only live once and life is here to be enjoyed and experienced to the fullest. Also when I booked it I planned for my father to be in our room as well so we needed a large room. We got a suite and every extra possible, the only thing I regret now is that I didn't know about STAR class. (SKY class sucks, it's like being a brides maid.) To follow up their surprise about finding out about the cruise, the next surprise was going to be seeing their room. The next video is of the family seeing their room for the first time. If you cannot smile while ,during or after this room (I cannot really call it a room tour) surprise you need to go take some happy pills. I hope that you have enjoyed this little adventure and trust that you can have as much fun in the future cruising as we had in the past. Just so that I could link these videos to this BLOG, I had to create a YouTube channel about half an hour ago. Nothing sexy to see, just life in the raw. Maybe I will be as creative as Matt and learn how to edit one day. Best Regards Rick I was also wrong about this cruise. I thought that it was going to be a one off - NO - I have four more cruises booked with more surprises to come.

  18. Wonder of the Seas is do to enter service at some point in 2022. I'm wondering if Wonder of the Seas will traverse the same route as Spectrum of the Seas did in 2019 to get to China? Or is Wonder to large to take the same route the smaller Spectrum took especially through the Suez Canal? Spectrum of the Seas had some interesting ports of call during that one way journey. So far I've only book one cruise in 2022 I'm trying to hold out to see how Royal Caribbean plans to get Wonder from Europe to China.

    Rethinking my plans

Hey y'all ? My husband and I cruised with our kids quite often when they were small. All of us absolutely loved it and looked forward to every cruise. I have been saying for years that I couldn't wait until my grandkids were old enough so I could take them on a cruise. Now I'm rethinking this.....today marks 12 days that we have had all 3 of them (ages 6, 3, and 11 months) while my son and daughter in law have been packing, moving, and unpacking. I'm whooped! These little people do not operate on my schedule. Trying to keep them all fed (holy cow can they eat!), keep up with the kindergarten homeschool (and I homeschooled all 3 of my kids through high school graduation, so I'm no stranger to that either), AND work is about to do me in. Let's not talk about the state of my house..... Fellow grandparents out there please reassure me that I won't die if I take them on a cruise without their parents ?

  22. I was just looking at the Royal Caribbean App checking through my reservations and noticed two ships we have reservations on where the App is not yet available, the Grandeur and Radiance. If the App is not available for things like Muster 2.0 Drill and paperless menus and alike, do think Royal will offer free Voom wifi on the ships so guests can access various tasks with minimal contact and interaction with crew? I am sure it is only a matter of time before all ships will be able to connect to the app, so it would be interesting to find out if Royal has any timelines?

@Lovetocruise2002 I know this is a reply to an old post, but still in my LONG education phase as I try to learn about Star Class prior to my Oct 2022 cruise. If you want to share your list (or if it is posted somewhere on the blog) I am happy to add it to my planning material.

    Deposit went up?

With all of the cancellations taking place and no one sailing I have not really been following along very closely to the latest RCL news. My wife and I were talking about how we do not have a cruise booked for late 2022 so I looked today and found a a cruise that we agreed on. I booked a balcony room for 6 nights on Explorer of the Seas out of Miami for October. I came to the part in which it told me the deposit amount and I was shocked to see that it was $500. When did the deposits go up from $200 to $500?

  26. The reports are very mixed. Quite a few people also said they heard nothing. But then many also said go to Deck 10. We don't really go to bed that early but we figured we'll just play it safe and go to Deck 10. And according to cruise deck plans, the center lofts on Deck 10 are actually slight larger than Deck 8. I always thought is was the ATS, smaller as you go higher, but it's the reverse.

  28. Every child is different just like every adult is different. Some will go with the flow and some may become stressed by a change in routine and that stress can quickly become stressful to you ? I have good friends that are terrible travel mates. Every minor thing becomes a source of anguish. I won't travel with them on any sort of vacation, by cruise or by land, but they are still good friends. Some kids will travel well while others may not. You won't know until you try. My kids who are now adults have zero recollection of the cruise we went on when they were under 5. They also don't remember the theme parks we visited. We enjoyed the cruise and theme parks and seeing their reactions in the moment at the time. If it weren't for the pictures we have they would swear we never took them - zero memories.

    Rethinking my plans

We took our daughters on several cruises when they were 7 and 11 at the youngest. They had a great time and have great memories. We recently took one of our daughters and son-in-law with their 2 year old son. It was not the same. He did not want to go to adventure ocean, didn’t have the patience for the dining room, and was not old enough for some of the H2O zone slides. We stayed behind in ports so our daughter and SIL could go off the ship. We will do it again but only when they are 5 and older.

I kept the link to my original genie questionnaire and it looks like a few of the questions changed since our star class cruise Christmas 2019. Revised questionnaire attached. Off the top, it looks like Elon Musk is new and the deserted island and device preference have been removed. Interested to see what it may look like going forward.

The deposit vary depending on the length of sailings. Most of my deposits are $450 each ($900 for a couple) because I book cruises that are mainly 9-12 days.

  35. Guilty. lol It's actually the Canada one. I was disappointed because we lost the 9 night Canada/NE in July 2020. This June, we are going to lose the Canada sailing on Oasis. So while I don't love the 4 night (too short) to one port only, the dates work out well with our anniversary, it takes us to the east coast, and it's Adventure so we figured we'll just extend the trip by spending a few days in NYC pre-cruise. I will have to look for a 9 night Canada/NE sailing another year when it doesn't conflict with my work schedule. I don't know why they are only doing them in September/October in 2022. If Hubby and I can both get vaccinated in time (he's Phase 1 and I should be Phase 2), we are going to the Rockies this summer. Staying in Canada, but at least we can get away for a bit.

  37. Royal has never published timelines for the app as it relates to which ship and when. Free Voom? No. They'll get these ships app enabled soon. It's probably already done but not turned on or imminent (It's a safe bet Odyssey will be app enabled yet she still shows not available in the app). Even if they needed to rely on shore based websites to accomplish muster 2.0 or menus they could just whitelist that one domain rather than requiring the entire internet be free. For example royalcaribbean.com and celebritycruises.com are free now. They could make any domain they want be reachable 24x7. However I don't think it will come to that. They didn't app-enable Grandeur because she was scheduled to leave the fleet in April. With her departure from the fleet no longer happening I expect her to be app enabled by the time guests have an opportunity to board. Not sure about Radiance or Explorer. Both were scheduled to have dry docks that were impacted by the pandemic so it's likely just a matter of implementing the tech upgrade outside of a dry dock. Explorer was recently in Port Canaveral picking up a lot of cargo and material so I would be surprised if that included some servers required to app enable her. It's probably on someone's to do list right now. I feel like in the coming months as the restart moves closer these ships won't be part of the first phase in the restart but as soon as they are approaching their individual restart date they'll flip the switch and suddenly they will be app enabled.

  38. I have prescription goggles that are pretty old but they work well enough for snorkeling. I bring my own snorkel usually as it's already not connected to a mask and just use the flippers & vest from the excursion. I don't have a problem with the snorkel not being attached as it stays in my mouth fine underwater. Only difference is that it doesn't hang on the side when I come out, I have to hold it or put it down. I found the goggles well worth the investment as we cruise so much. Exact prescription doesn't matter underwater so they will always be fine.

  42. Hello Guys, I wear glasses, and I have found the cheapest option was to visit a local dive shop who sell masks which are made to be able to click on lenses onto the from of the mask lens. The beauty of these is that if your prescription changes you can simply clip on a new lens. My right eye is different to my left and so able to mix and match lens. They generally come in 0.5 increments. They are quite durable, I use them for diving and snorkelling, and mine are about three years old. There was an option where I could have glass lens ground and fitted into the mask, but they were very expensive and as a seasonal user, the clip on lens are great, highly recommend them.

  43. I got some inserts called "Trident Dive Optx Scuba Mask Magnification Lenses" from Amazon for $25. I had issues because I did not get them placed correctly in my mask. Due to this things were blurry. Then on my second dive one of them washed out and is gone. I will probably keep the one in my mask so I can read my computer with one eye. This could be due to me installing the night before the dive. I like the concept since I can keep the mask I like and the low cost. A better way to install would be good. Some reviews use a touch of glue.
    1 point
  44. I believe Cressi sells a mask that has replaceable lenses for people with a need for prescription lenses. I am ok to drive with correction but usually just wear contacts when I dive. I just make sure that I take along extra rewetting drops and flush my eyes well after each dive.
    1 point
  45. I agree with @IRMO12HD; if you wear contacts, they are a great option too. Then you don't have to worry about a new mask if your Rx changes (or leaving your mask at home or on the ship). Unfortunately, I can only do contacts if the excursion is early in the cruise. I think the increased salt throughout the week does something to the shape my eyes. I just can't get them in comfortably after day 4, but when I get home it's back to normal after a few days.

  46. We love the Intercontinental Miami!! That is our go-to hotel when sailing out of Miami. We always book the Bay View rooms and we also book Club level since that gives you access to their lounge (well worth the extra cost IMO). The hotel is a 5 min walk to Bayside Marketplace where there are tons of choices for dining and shopping. It’s a 15 min ride to South Beach if you want that. And best part is that it takes less than 10 mins to get to the port of Miami. Love that hotel, I miss it. ?

  48. There are a few good blogs by members here on each of those suites. Have a look through them. It might help with your decision. I personally agree with @WAAAYTOOO. For the jump in price of the OLS, it is not worth it to me.
