Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Spectrum of the Seas, keel laying ceremony took place at the Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock, Germany today. During the ceremony, newly minted coins were placed under the keel and will stay in place there until the end of the ship’s construction. Once the ship is near to completion, the coins are retrieved and presented to the ship’s Captain and crew to be placed onboard the ship. According to maritime tradition, the coins are said to bring luck to the ship during its construction process and then to its Captain and crew when she is sailing out at sea.
The idea behind The Local is to showcase people from around the world, their unique passions and their culture.
The first season focuses on three locals from Alaska. In episode one, Master carver and artist Wayne Price creates fine art in the traditional style of the Tlingit people. Wayne’s artistic creations cover a broad range of design and artifacts, including totem poles, dugout canoes, masks, paddles, clan hats and jewelry. Wayne works with local youth to pass on the craft and culture of the Tlingit people.

Royal Caribbean’s hotel procurement team sources all consumables and replaceables aboard some 48 “floating hotels” in its global fleet. Such items as plants and flowers, dishware, bed linens and uniforms, among many others, are obvious. Others – tear-away shorts for “sexy man” contests on the pool deck and holiday decorations – not so much.
The newest member of Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis class of ships, Symphony of the Seas, is now one step closer to full completion as her April 2018 debut approaches. With the exterior now complete, Symphony of the Seas was floated out of her dry dock on June 9th, 2017 to begin the next phase of interior construction.
